Work

it’s going to get worse before it gets better

China-related planning is my specialty

I’m an independent political risk & strategy advisor; my focus is research & reports on the US & China, particularly relations between the two states. Specifically, I: conduct research, prepare reports, and design metrics to assess major strategic initiatives. These reports are varied, including China-related strategic planning, US and/or China macroeconomic assessments & trends, and whatever else may be necessary to ensure a clear & concise report. My work spans many issues, including legal, economic, social, and political topics.

While I have a particular focus on financial services (namely, capital markets), I support a variety of executive strategic decision-making with clear & concise memoranda. My clients are across industries and have included major Wall St. banks, oil & gas firms, and startups. I am particularly proud of the warnings I issued to my clients in January & February 2020 about the impending COVID-19 crisis; many reported back that my research was not merely timely, but actually provided early warning about the scale of the problem and allowed greater planning for business continuity before March 2020.

If you’re concerned about the — admittedly deteriorating — state of affairs between the US & China, I’d be happy to discuss how I can help you better understand and navigate them. My email is robertmarchini1993@gmail.com.

Background & Education

My background is Tulane University, class of 2016, economics & political science. I actually was not particularly interested in China while in college, instead mostly focusing on Europe and Russia. I still keep somewhat abreast of affairs there, but devote most of my time to China now.

After graduation, I started work at China Fortune Land Development (CFLD), at the time one of the largest property developers in China. I worked for CFLD’s strategic investments arm, Zenity Asset Management. My responsibility combined an economist and a political analysis function. My daily work involved interpreting and summarizing the latest US economic data & research, as well as political & policy developments, to support strategic decision-making by company executives.

While much of the work was US macroeconomic analysis, I was particularly focused on US-China relations (such as trade conflicts) that could affect the company’s businesses. To that end, I prepared briefings & memorandum on the direction of US policy on issues relevant to the company’s strategic initiatives, and delivered them to our Managing Directors. This included a weekly summary. Many of these reports were delivered to the C-suite and Board of Directors of the company in Beijing. I left Zenity shortly before our 2020 exit from New York City and CFLD’s subsequent 2021 bankruptcy.
